RBCs in pulmonary capillary stays for about 0.75 seconds and exchange of gases is possible throughout this period. But both O2 and CO2 transfer is completed by 0.3s. So, diffusion reserve of 0.45 seconds (0.75-0.3) remains, which is utilized during exercise when blood flows quickly in pulmonary capillaries.
