Can diabetes cause kidney, heart and eye problem?

Hello,
I have just been diagnosed with diabetes. I am 43 years old and I am upset about it. Friends told me that it can cause kidney failure, and heart and eye problems. Is it right.
Please help me.

Your friend is right.
Diabetes can cause Kidney and Eye problem.
I m not sure about the heart.
